Healing begins when we stop asking how to manage symptoms and start asking why those symptoms exist in the first place.

On today’s episode, I had the opportunity to interview Ashley Rangel, RN, BC-FMP, a Functional Nurse Academy graduate, Board-Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, and Registered Nurse with 25 years of experience.

Throughout her nursing career, Ashley served in Women’s Health, Surgery, Hospice, and Home Health, caring for patients during some of the most vulnerable and challenging moments of their lives. Over time, she began to recognize that many individuals were struggling with chronic health concerns that were not being fully addressed within the conventional healthcare model.

During the COVID pandemic, Ashley helped launch a Mobile IV business to support individuals outside of the hospital setting. Through that experience, she saw firsthand how many people were searching for more than temporary relief. They wanted answers, hope, and a deeper understanding of why they were experiencing ongoing health challenges.

That desire to better support people on a deeper level ultimately led Ashley to functional medicine and the Functional Nurse Academy.

After completing her training through the Functional Nurse Academy and becoming a Board-Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, Ashley founded Voice of Truth Wellness, a holistic wellness practice dedicated to helping individuals identify potential root causes of their symptoms and support the body’s natural healing processes.

What Ashley Loved About Functional Nurse Academy

  • The mentorship and supportive FNA community. Ashley loved knowing she was never alone in her journey and always had experienced practitioners to learn from.
  • Access to expert guidance for complex cases. When she encountered challenging client cases, she had a trusted community and access to the FNA monthly mentorship program.
  • An incredible return on investment. Ashley earned back her entire investment in Functional Nurse Academy within just one month of launching her functional medicine practice.
  • Now earning three times her hospital income. By implementing the clinical and business strategies she learned through FNA, Ashley has built a thriving functional medicine practice and is now making three times what she earned working in the hospital.
  • Comprehensive business training. Ashley was grateful that FNA taught both the functional medicine and the business side of practice ownership, giving her everything she needed to confidently launch her practice.
  • Ready-to-implement systems. Rather than trying to figure everything out on her own, Ashley was able to immediately establish her functional medicine business because the systems, resources, and step-by-step roadmap were already outlined for her.
Melissa's knowledge base is one of the best! I love that she is an open book sharing all of her expertise and experience as well as sharing all her tools to help me have a profitable practice.
Through Voice of Truth Wellness, Ashley now works with clients nationwide using functional medicine principles, nutrition, lifestyle support, natural therapies, and personalized wellness strategies.

Two inspiring client stories

Ashley also shares two inspiring client stories that demonstrate how functional nurses can educate and empower individuals to support their overall wellness.

One client, a woman in her 40s, had been experiencing episodes of fainting, painful menstrual cycles, and chronic fatigue. Despite seeking medical care, she was still searching for answers and was referred to Ashley by a friend. Through a functional nursing approach focused on comprehensive health history, nutrition education, lifestyle coaching, and supporting healthy detoxification processes, Ashley helped her identify potential environmental and lifestyle factors to discuss with her healthcare team, including concerns related to mold exposure and microbial imbalances. Over the course of several months, the client reported that her fainting episodes resolved, her menstrual discomfort improved, and her energy levels significantly increased.

Ashley also shares the story of a mother who was struggling with debilitating psoriasis that had greatly impacted her quality of life. Using a functional nursing approach centered on education, Ashley worked with her to support gut health, healthy liver function, nutrition, and foundational lifestyle habits. Over time, the client reported significant improvements in her symptoms and was able to return to her normal daily activities.

Throughout the episode, Ashley emphasizes that her role as a functional nurse is to educate, coach, and empower clients by helping them create an internal environment that supports overall health. By focusing on foundational areas such as nutrition, healthy detoxification pathways, microbiome health, and lifestyle, she helps clients work alongside their healthcare providers to support the body's natural ability to maintain health and wellness.

From Symptom Management to Root-Cause Wellness

One of the major themes of Ashley’s story is the shift from managing symptoms to asking why those symptoms are happening in the first place.

After years of serving patients in traditional nursing roles, Ashley saw how many people were learning to accept sickness, exhaustion, and chronic symptoms as normal. But through functional medicine, she began to see health through a different lens.

Instead of viewing the body as broken, Ashley believes symptoms are often signs that the body is asking for support.

Her work is grounded in the idea that when the right environment is created, the body has an incredible ability to heal. That includes looking at factors such as nutrition, lifestyle, stress, environmental exposures, natural therapies, and the whole person, not just a single symptom or diagnosis.

Functional Nursing, Ozone Therapy, and Bioresonance

During our conversation, Ashley shared several of the tools and approaches she uses in her wellness practice.

One of those modalities is ozone therapy, which is used by some integrative and functional practitioners to support overall wellness, promote healthy immune function, support mitochondrial health, and assist the body’s natural healing processes.

We also discussed bioresonance analysis, a tool some practitioners use to help identify potential areas of imbalance within the body that may warrant further investigation.

Ashley also shared about frequency-based therapies and how some practitioners use them as part of a comprehensive wellness approach to support healing and optimize health.

For Ashley, these tools are part of a broader whole-person approach. Her goal is not to offer temporary relief, but to help clients better understand what may be contributing to their symptoms and support the body in a more intentional and personalized way.

Helping Clients Reclaim Hope

Ashley’s practice is built on the belief that people are not broken.

Many of the individuals she works with have felt discouraged, dismissed, or stuck in chronic symptoms. Through her work, Ashley helps clients begin to reconnect with hope and take a more active role in their health journey.

Her approach blends science, faith, and natural therapies to help clients reclaim health, energy, and purpose.

Rather than simply telling clients what to do, Ashley educates, guides, and empowers them to better understand their bodies and create meaningful change.

A New Path for Nurses

Ashley’s story is also a powerful example of how nurses can expand their impact through functional medicine.

With 25 years of nursing experience, Ashley brought a strong foundation of assessment, compassion, patient education, and clinical care into her functional wellness practice. The Functional Nurse Academy helped her build on that foundation and move into a new model of care that aligned more deeply with the kind of healing work she felt called to do.

Today, through Voice of Truth Wellness, Ashley is serving clients across the country and helping individuals pursue wellness through a root-cause, whole-person approach.

Her journey is a reminder that nurses have powerful skills that can be used far beyond the conventional healthcare setting. With functional medicine training, nurses can create businesses, serve clients in meaningful ways, and help restore hope for people who are searching for a deeper path to healing.
