Some of the most meaningful functional nursing specialties begin with a personal struggle—and a desire to help others feel less alone.

For Kerri Takata, a registered nurse with more than 30 years of experience and the founder of One Together Coaching and Consulting in Chattanooga, Tennessee, years of weight struggles and restrictive diets helped shape her passion for supporting others.

Through faith, self-compassion, and a more personalized approach to wellness, Kerri found a new direction for her health and her work. Today, she combines her nursing background, holistic coaching experience, and Functional Nurse Academy education to help clients navigate weight concerns, manage stress, and make sustainable lifestyle changes.

Her journey highlights how functional medicine training for nurses can expand an existing coaching practice and deepen the support nurses provide to their clients.

What Kerri Loved About Functional Nurse Academy

Kerri was already completing a holistic nurse coaching program when a friend introduced her to Functional Nurse Academy. She had been exploring functional medicine for her own health and saw an opportunity to deepen the support she could offer others.

Understanding the Connections Behind Health Concerns
FNA helped Kerri connect her nursing knowledge with a broader understanding of potential contributors to ongoing symptoms. She became especially interested in how health history, nutrition, hormones, and lifestyle patterns fit together.
After decades in nursing, she appreciated having a new framework for asking deeper questions and helping clients better understand their health.

Expanding Her Coaching Services
Before adding functional nursing education, Kerri’s work already included mindset and behavior change. FNA helped her expand those services through more comprehensive functional wellness assessments and adding in laboratory services.
She could now explore additional areas that might warrant attention or collaboration with a client’s medical provider, while continuing to offer the accountability and encouragement central to her coaching practice.

Employer-Paid Education and a New Career Direction
Kerri’s employer actually paid for her Functional Nurse Academy enrollment while she was still working full time.

Through FNA, she gained knowledge and tools that helped her expand her services and better serve her clients. Adding functional nursing education to her existing coaching background allowed her to offer more comprehensive, personalized wellness support.
Kerri shared that she was able to leave her full-time job within approximately three months and chose to focus on growing One Together Coaching and Consulting.

For nurses considering functional medicine training, her experience also highlights the opportunity to ask an employer about continuing education reimbursement.

Kerri’s Personal Weight Loss Journey

Kerri understands the frustration of trying repeatedly to lose weight without finding an approach that feels sustainable.

She shared that her weight reached 330 pounds and that she tried numerous diets, weight loss medications, and programs. Some brought temporary changes, but the weight often returned. Over time, the struggle affected her confidence, relationships, and willingness to participate in activities with her family.

One particularly difficult experience involved significant liver enzyme elevations after taking a weight loss pill. Kerri reported that her liver recovered, but the experience prompted her to reconsider how she approached her health and the products she was willing to try.

Her turning point began with a question she believes God placed on her heart: Did she love herself?

That question shifted her attention toward how she spoke to herself, cared for herself, and experienced daily life. Instead of making every decision revolve around the scale, she began prioritizing rest, nourishing food, enjoyable movement, and a healthier relationship with herself.

Faith, Self-Compassion, and Sustainable Change

Kerri’s Christian faith is an important part of her story and the inspiration behind her business name.

She remembered feeling alone while receiving advice about her weight and health. Through One Together Coaching and Consulting, she wants clients to know they have someone walking alongside them.

She described the biblical image of Jesus reaching out to Peter as an inspiration for that mission: offering a hand when someone feels overwhelmed or unsure of their next step.

In her own life, Kerri also began moving away from an all-or-nothing approach to food. One choice no longer had to become a reason for prolonged self-criticism or abandoning her goals.

That perspective now informs her coaching. She helps clients consider realistic changes, recognize their needs, and build habits they can continue practicing.

A Personalized Functional Nursing Approach to Weight Loss Support

Kerri’s practice considers more than a person’s eating and exercise habits alone.
During our conversation, we discussed areas such as:
- Nutrition and possible nutrient deficiencies
- Sleep quality and daily routines
- Stress and opportunities for rest
- Thyroid and hormone-related concerns
- Blood sugar and metabolic health concerns
- Digestive symptoms
- Emotional well-being and self-talk
- Medication concerns to discuss with the prescribing provider
Rather than giving every client the same plan, Kerri uses health history, wellness assessments, coaching conversations, and available laboratory information to personalize education and support.
As a registered nurse, her work centers on coaching, education, and collaboration. Medical diagnosis, prescribing, and treatment decisions remain with the appropriately licensed medical provider.

Helping Women Give Themselves Permission to Rest

When I asked Kerri about client successes, she emphasized women who had learned to make room for their own needs.

Many were accustomed to taking care of everyone else and felt guilty about resting. Kerri helped them recognize that scheduling time for themselves could be a meaningful part of caring for their health.

Her workshops, including Beyond Survival Mode, reflect this interest in stress awareness, self-compassion, and practical tools for slowing down.

For Kerri, progress includes helping someone feel supported, develop healthier routines, and approach self-care with less guilt.

Building a Flexible Functional Nursing Business

At the time of our interview, Kerri described offering three-month, six-month, and one-year coaching programs, along with flexible packages tailored to clients’ schedules and needs.

One client, for example, worked with her over five months through longer sessions every other week. The arrangement still included a clear start and end date and ongoing accountability.

She also described providing one-on-one coaching, group services, workshops, community outreach, and both in-person and virtual sessions.

For nurses interested in starting a functional wellness business, Kerri’s experience shows how an existing coaching foundation can develop into a more comprehensive, personalized service.

Frequently Asked Questions About Becoming a Functional Nurse

What is a functional nurse?

A functional nurse is a licensed nurse who applies the principles of functional medicine to educate and empower clients by helping them identify and address potential root causes of health concerns. Functional nurses focus on nutrition, lifestyle, sleep, stress management, environmental influences, and other evidence-informed approaches while practicing within their nursing scope of practice.

What is the difference between a functional practice owned by a NP and RN or LPN?

Nurse practitioners may operate a medical practice where permitted by state law. Depending on their state's regulations, NPs may diagnose medical conditions, order and interpret laboratory testing, prescribe medications, and provide medical treatment.

RNs and LPNs can own and operate independent wellness-focused functional nursing practices. Rather than diagnosing or treating medical conditions, they educate and empower clients through personalized wellness plans, nutrition and lifestyle education, health coaching, specialty laboratory education and on going support.

How Do Non-Advanced Practice Functional Nurses Utilize Laboratory Testing?

RNs and LPNs can access both conventional and specialty laboratory testing through partnerships with functional medicine laboratories. These partnerships allow nurses to order testing through a physician network at affordable wholesale pricing, while practicing within their professional scope.

While nurse practitioners (NPs) may have the authority to diagnose medical conditions and independently order laboratory testing depending on their state laws, non-advanced practice nurses use laboratory data to educate clients about potential patterns of dysfunction. Laboratory findings can also help guide personalized wellness recommendations and support collaboration with the client's healthcare team to optimize health outcomes.

Please note: Certain states, including New Jersey (NJ) and Rhode Island (RI), have restrictions on laboratory ordering through some functional medicine laboratory networks.

Does Functional Nurse Academy provide continuing education for nurses?

Functional Nurse Academy is an approved provider of continuing nursing education. Graduates receive 90 nursing contact hours, approved for LPNs, RNs, and NPs.

The program combines comprehensive functional medicine education with practical application, case studies, and business mentorship, giving nurses the knowledge, tools, and confidence to launch and grow their own functional wellness businesses.
