Functional Nurse Academy Success Stories: Koral Worsham, RN and a Root-Cause Approach to Mold-Related Illness

When Koral Worsham, RN, BC-FMP first entered nursing nearly two decades ago, she was driven by a desire to help people heal. Over the course of her 19-year nursing career, she gained experience in Pediatrics, General Medicine, Oncology, the NICU, Emergency Medicine, Outpatient Clinics, and Telephone Triage. Yet despite her extensive clinical experience, she often felt frustrated by a healthcare system focused primarily on symptom management rather than uncovering the underlying causes of illness.

That frustration became deeply personal when her mother was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

As Koral searched for answers beyond conventional treatment options, she discovered functional medicine and began learning about the profound impact that nutrition, gut health, environmental exposures, lifestyle factors, and toxic burden can have on chronic disease. Determined to expand her knowledge and serve patients differently, she enrolled in the Functional Nurse Academy.
"Whenever I talk about the Functional Nurse Academy, I rave about it because it gave me all of the foundational knowledge in functional medicine that I needed—and even taught me how to start a business. I always encourage other nurses to take the leap of faith and enroll. Honestly, it was absolutely worth the investment, and I have made back my investment at least tenfold."
After completing the Functional Nurse Academy in 2024, Koral founded Redeeming Roots Functional Medicine, where she now helps clients uncover and address the root causes of chronic illness through a whole-person approach that supports the mind, body, and spirit.

Koral's client case study: Uncovering Mold-Related Neuroinflammatory Illness

The Challenge

One of Koral's most remarkable cases involved a client who presented with severe neurological symptoms and feared he was developing a progressive neurological disease.

Prior to working with Koral, the client had already consulted multiple specialists. Despite extensive evaluations and a normal EMG, his symptoms continued to worsen.

His symptoms included:

  • Migratory muscle twitching
  • Numbness in the hands
  • Electric shock sensations
  • Facial twitching
  • Severe sleep disruption
  • Brain fog
  • Anxiety
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Declining ability to work and perform daily activities

Like many individuals struggling with chronic illness, he felt frightened, discouraged, and increasingly convinced that he would never regain his quality of life.

Looking Deeper

During their initial telehealth consultation, Koral did what nurses do best: she listened.

Rather than focusing solely on laboratory results or diagnoses, she spent time gathering a comprehensive history and identifying patterns that had previously been overlooked.

Through detailed questioning, Koral discovered an important clue: the client's symptoms consistently improved when he was away from his secondary residence.

Further discussion revealed a persistent musty odor in portions of the home.

Recognizing the possibility of an environmental trigger, Koral shifted the investigation toward biotoxin illness and toxic mold exposure.

Functional Nursing Assessment & Coordination

Using the functional nursing model, Koral coordinated and guided several next steps:

  • Visual Contrast Sensitivity (VCS) screening
  • ERMI environmental mold testing
  • Comprehensive inflammatory and biotoxin-related laboratory assessment
  • CIRS-focused laboratory educational evaluation
  • MARCoNS testing
  • Collaboration with prescribing providers
  • Ongoing telehealth monitoring and care coordination
  • Environmental testing ultimately revealed a significant hidden mold burden within the home.

Additional testing demonstrated inflammatory patterns consistent with chronic biotoxin exposure.

MARCoNS testing was also positive, providing valuable information that helped guide subsequent therapeutic decisions and collaborative care planning.

Functional Nursing Interventions

Koral helped the client implement practical and personalized strategies, including:

  • Immediate reduction of environmental exposure
  • Education regarding mold-related illness
  • Anti-inflammatory nutrition coaching
  • Sleep optimization strategies
  • Hydration and micronutrient support
  • Activity pacing and nervous system regulation
  • Coordination with prescribing providers for additional therapies
  • Ongoing monitoring of symptoms and functional outcomes

Throughout the process, Koral maintained frequent follow-up visits, helping the client stay engaged, informed, and supported.

The Outcome

Within weeks of reducing exposure and beginning targeted interventions, significant improvements began to emerge.

The client reported:

  • Improved sleep
  • Reduced muscle twitching
  • Decreased pain
  • Improved cognitive function
  • Reduced anxiety
  • Increased energy
  • Ability to return to work
  • As remediation efforts continued and the healing plan progressed, his recovery accelerated.

Today, he reports being approximately 80-90% recovered and has regained much of the quality of life he feared he had permanently lost.

Lessons for Functional Nurses

This case highlights the critical role nurses can play in identifying overlooked contributors to chronic illness.

By taking a comprehensive history, recognizing environmental patterns, coordinating testing, collaborating with providers, and supporting patients through implementation, functional nurses can help uncover root causes that may otherwise remain hidden.

As Koral's story demonstrates, healing often begins when someone finally asks the right questions.
